So...this film isn't really in my Top 5 Animated films I'm anticipating for this year, but the reason I'm talking about it is because it's by a studio..I may have praised a bit too much in the past. Illumination Entertainment. Here I was thinking they would be the next big studio and, while they kinda are Box Office wise, there not so much in terms of writing. So, The Secret Life of Pets. The trailers basically gave us the basic set up. Pets living secret lives while their owners are away. Immediately people compared it to Toy Story. And after this new trailer....it just seems to drive home that comparison.

I mean, you have a dog named Max. Who's owner Katie gets a new dog named Duke, who dangers his position as favorite pet. They end up getting separated from their home, and they're also caught up with a rabbit's scheme to get revenge on happy pets and their owners with an army of abandoned pets. Yeah, most of it DOES sound a lot like Toy Story. Not just the first film, but a bit of the sequels as well. You got the subplot where all the other pets set out to find them, like the second movie, and the rabbit with his "flushed pets" army could be compared to Lotso and the Daycare from the third one. But really, removing Toy Story, it still sounds like that generic buddy/pet movie. Where the two don't get a long at first, but then learn to work together and be friends, as well as the Homeward Bound story where the pet's get separated from their owners, and their quest to reunite with them.....Yeah I'm sure you guys can list 5 films with that same premise.

So....yeah, I'm kinda skeptical on this one. Plus....I feel pretty silly praising this studio in the past. Don't get me wrong, I think they DO have some talent in them. Their animation's really colorful and at times creative, and I love how they handle the casting with their films, even if it involves the old practice with celebrities. But even then...I feel they'll mostly be in the same league as Blue Sky and Sony Pictures Animation. They're animation's mostly very well done, but their story telling isn't anything to write home about. (No pun intended.) But really....can these guys make more good films? Or did they just get lucky with Despicable Me 1 and 2? Well, we'll see.

But what do you guys think? Can this still be descent? Or is it too familiar for it's own good?

I might see it if it's decent. I like the voice cast, and Duke reminds me of the dog my dad brought home to our house hold.
